3 ACRYLIC AS WATERCOLOR USING ACRYLIC ON ABSORBENT SURFACES TO MIMIC WATERCOLOR EFFECTS One of the biggest challenges of using watercolor is that it remains water soluble when it dries. Working in layers is nearly impossible as each new layer at least partially dissolves whatever is below. Unlike watercolor, acrylic paint is water resistant when dry, allowing endless layers to be built up without destroying the layers below. { MATERIALS } > ABSORBENT SUPPORT, SUCH AS STRETCHED WATERCOLOR PAPER, AQUABORD, CANVAS, OR PANEL COATED WITH GOLDEN ABSORBENT GROUND > FLUID ACRYLICS > DISTILLED WATER STEP 1: Using a soft brush, dampen a portion of the absorbent ground with distilled water.

To a very large extent, the characteristics of a binder determine the characteristics of a paint made from it. Gum arabic, for instance, remains water soluble when it dries. Therefore, so does watercolor. The binder for acrylic paint is an emulsion made from of an acrylic polymer and water, also known as an acrylic dispersion. Because it is synthetic, its characteristics are not so limited. Although one of acrylic paint’s earliest selling points was that it dries quickly, for instance, Golden now produces a product line of acrylic paints called OPEN, with extended drying times, formulated to mimic the handling properties of oil paint.

STEP 3: Once the sealed edges of the tape are dry, fill in the shapes with fluid acrylic color. Allow the paint to dry, and apply a second coat if needed. STEP 4: Carefully pull away the tape and allow the paint to fully dry. STEP 5: Tape off a new shape that overlaps the earlier ones. STEP 6: Seal the tape edges (repeat step 2). STEP 7: Fill in the new shape with a contrasting color. STEP 8: Carefully remove the tape and allow the paint to dry. Product Tip: Several different acrylic mediums work well for sealing painter’s tape.
