2 Basecoat the project surface with the greenish-gray paint. Allow the paint to dry. ” 3 Divide your surface into sections, avoiding right angles (try for obtuse angles). Tape off one section. Brush slightly thinned beige paint over the section. Pull the notched squeegee through the wet paint, softly arcing and waving as you go. The type of pattern is up to you, soft or wild. Continue to follow your pattern over the entire section. You may add voids to your pattern by moving the squeegee farther over or slightly changing the angle of the pull.

Most important, Japan Color dries flat. Standard paint-store paint only approaches this depth of color with paints that have a sheen (such as eggshell), and this technique requires a flat paint. 7 36 Broken Paint The blue used on this surface is Japan Color ultramarine blue. The basecoat is a very light gray. The gray basecoat offers a subtle contrast. To reduce the contrast even further, use a darker gray basecoat. For a higher contrast, use a white basecoat. Refer to pages 7, 8, and 14 before beginning.

Tip: Add a few drops of food coloring to the glue to help you see it better against the white paper. 3 Lay the paper smoothly, glue-side down, on the project surface, extending it slightly beyond the surface. Firmly secure the paper and roll out any air pockets with the rubber roller. Tip: Use your fingertips to gently press out any small air bubbles. Don’t worry about an occasional wrinkle, as it will lend itself to the look, but keep wrinkles to a minimum. 4 Continue tearing, gluing, and laying various shapes of paper, overlapping the other pieces as you work.
