HOW TO MEASURE EF DEFICITS Barkley (2011b) developed the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS) to measure the specific behaviors that define EF. Empirical studies have shown that the BDEFS is a more ecologically valid measure in predicting ADHD symptomatology compared with cognitive tests of EF (Dehili, Prevatt, & Coffman, 2013; Kamradt, Ullsperger, & Nikolas, 2014). Consequently, the BDEFS can be useful as a pre–post outcome measure, as well as a way of understanding client difficulties and formulating coaching goals.

The client will still need to change some behaviors to accomplish goals. Medication may not work initially, side effects can be problematic, and this can be frustrating for clients. Clients should be encouraged to carefully monitor their medication because it may take several months to achieve the best dosage and type of medication.
